Martin guitars are manufactured by C.F. Martin & Company in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. The most prominent product that Martin guitars offer is the steel string flat top acoustic guitars. The 1830s gave birth to Martin guitars in Germany. Restrictive demands in Germany led the founder, C.F. Martin, to move his operation to New York. A lull in sales for Martin guitars came during the Great Depression. The creation of a 14 fret guitar was the product of this lull. The style was designed to allow a larger range of notes over the standard 12 fret guitar. Additionally, the dreadnought guitar was created. This model of acoustic guitar featured a deeper and larger body than standard acoustic guitars. The name of the dreadnought came from the launch of the H.M.S. Dreadnought by the Royal Navy. This battleship was significantly larger than any other battleship in service at that time. The dreadnought dimensions have since become a standard for acoustic guitars.
Martin guitars have also been manufactured in hollow body electric guitar models, but the result was poorly received. For the most part, Martin focuses mainly on their renowned acoustic guitars. Custom Martin guitars are also available. Signature guitars from artists such as Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Eric Clapton are also a part of Martin’s guitar repertoire.
