Popular guitar brands need a feature that sets them apart from other guitars and makes them unique. Ovation guitars found a way to accomplish that goal. The Ovation Guitar Company is known for their unique acoustic guitars, although their history also has electric and electric acoustic guitars as part of their repertoire.
Like many of the popular guitar companies, Ovation guitars are manufactured in the United States. The headquarters for the Ovation Guitar Company is located in Connecticut. The company is owned by Kaman Music Corporation, and the main focus is on the manufacturing of acoustic guitars. Solid body electric Ovation guitars made an appearance in the 1970s and 1980s, but the production ceased due to lack of popularity among the brand’s electric models. These models are now considered collectibles since few were produced during their short lifespan.
Charles Kaman, the founder of the Ovation Guitar Company, came up with a unique idea for acoustic guitars. By trade, Kaman designed rotor blades for helicopters. Through his work, he learned a great deal about composite materials and their effects with sound. As a musician, Kaman put his knowledge to work for him and came up with an acoustic guitar that used composite materials for the bowl construction. Most acoustic guitars used wood for the bowl construction. This technique helped to control the resonance and improve the tone of the guitar.
Additionally, Ovation guitars later featured multiple sound holes on the top of the guitar. This innovation wasn’t in effect until the late 1970s, however. Musicians who played live acoustic concerts found Ovation guitars especially convenient. This is because the guitars featured onboard equalizers and preamplification controls. These extra features helped reduce feedback problems that came about due to the high volume that was required to be heard over a crowd.
Why the solid body electric Ovation guitars never reached widespread popularity is not known. The first solid body electric guitar that featured active electronics was a product of Ovation. It was known as the Breadwinner. This model proved to be very effective in the studio, and numerous musicians used it as a studio guitar. However, the guitar never really caught the attention of the mainstream market, so the production of the guitars was put to a stop only eight years later. During this period, Ovation also tried several other solid body electric guitar models with similar results. Limited numbers of each model were produced which now makes them extremely collectible.
The renowned acoustic Ovation guitars are still produced, and the company has shifted its focus to include electric acoustic guitars. Ovation guitars can also be found in bass models. The acoustic guitars still feature the multiple sound holes and roundback design that brought them fame and success over 30 years ago. The Ovation name still carries with it the pristine sound and innovative designs that set them apart from their competitors in the early days of the company. The guitars come with several different options depending on their intended use, including sound hole design, nut width, construction material for guitar top and depth of the guitar’s bowl.
