The market for acoustic guitars is very competitive due to the number of manufacturers, especially in the United States. Fighting for popularity requires something special in the guitar design. Taylor guitars have found a niche in the acoustic market and are making their way up the ranks for more widespread popularity.
Taylor Guitars is a guitar manufacturing company located in California with an additional shop just across the border in Mexico. The company has been in operation since 1974 when Bob Taylor bought American Dream with two partners. The company was looking for an American name that projected the image of a large corporation. They first tried Westlund Music Company, but they wanted a logo that fit better on the headstock of their guitars. The name was changed to Taylor Guitars and has remained the same for more than 30 years.
Bob Taylor was the designer and main manufacturer of Taylor guitars, while his partners took care of the business side of things. A bolt on neck is one of the features that set the Taylor guitars apart from other guitars. Guitar manufacturing standards usually use one piece of wood that supports the fretboard up to the 14th fret, and the remaining portion of the fretboard is simply glued to the soundboard. The design for Taylor guitars uses one solid piece of wood to support the fretboard of the guitar all the way up to the 19th fret. This technique makes it easy to realign the neck of the guitar later if the need arises.
High quality, aged wood is also a unique feature of Taylor guitars. Brazilian rosewood is sometimes used on guitars that they are currently making. The tone that this type of wood provides is generally considered superior to all other wood types. The Presentation series of Taylor guitars uses this rare wood for construction materials, which makes the series the most highly regarded of Taylor guitars.
The Mexico plant that produces Taylor guitars only manufactures two models, the Baby Taylor and Big Baby. Both of these styles utilize the dreadnought dimensions that were made a standard in guitar manufacturing after the innovative design by Martin guitars. However, the Baby Taylor and Big Baby are smaller versions of the dreadnought design. The Baby Taylor is ¾ the size of the original dreadnought, and the Big Baby is 15/16 the size of a standard dreadnought. The size of these Taylor guitar models makes them ideal for traveling. The plant is also the manufacturer of Taylor guitar cases.
Taylor guitars come in their prestigious acoustic models, as well as, electric acoustic and electric models. Each model comes in either the standard right handed versions or left handed versions. Some models include a cutaway and a patented pickup system. The pickup system includes a pickup mounted on the neck and an onboard preamplifier. The early systems used two AA batteries as the power source. Recent modifications have resulted in the use of a 9-volt battery instead of the AA batteries.
